BURBERRY CHILDRENSWEAR DESIGN COMPETITION
Experimenting with childrenswear for this competition was very enjoyable, as I was able to express my personality within my designs. I based the concept about my huge passion for travelling, which compliments my outgoing personality. Exploring the world and experiencing new cultures inspires me within my research.
Looking at the theme, ‘Burberry Animal Kingdom’ I was drawn to tropical birds, mainly parrots, as they are brightly coloured and one of the most intelligent bird species. I incorporated some photographs that I have captured on my travels, where I have come across a range of wildlife, some of which forms the basis of my design concept. I also took into account the use of sustainable fabrics, which is a very important factor to me in the world of design. Parrots are known for imitating human voices, which you could relate to children as they tend to repeat what they hear and learn from this, so I like the idea of the hidden association within my concept. Also, children are drawn to colour, especially primary colours, hence my decision to focus on one of the most colourful birds in existence. By conducting research I identified that these primary colours, portrayed by parrots, are common of 1990s sportswear, therefore I focused on activewear / athleisure wear. Designing garments that can be worn in different settings, such as, athletic activities, casual or social occasions or even at school, allowing sportswear to be more versatile, comfortable and fashionable. This also plays to my love of keeping fit and healthy.
